🎙️ EPISODE 126: 08.05.18
Wow it’s 2018 and we’re still talking about the KING of comedy? What about the QUEEN(S)? Ladies can I get a “hell yeah!” ? |
2024 UPDATE: This was one of a handful of Scorsese films I wanted to rewatch for this chronological
Director Focus. It's most striking to see the range DeNiro has in all these leads, from
Taxi Driver to
New York, New York to
Raging Bull and then this. It's quite the run (
NY, NY not included)! Unsurprisingly, this film and Taxi Driver are the most successful and the parallel between those movies is obvious. It almost feels like Rupert Pupkin IS Travis Bickle, if he'd been born a decade later. There's also connective tissue in their endings, thwarting the audience's expectations by not just rendering their antiheroes sympathetic but ultimately rewarding them. Maybe it's a cheap trick (and in the case of
King, perhaps just more fantasy) but it works and elevates both pictures in the end.
