Support the Girls

🎙️ EPISODE 190: 05.01.19

Sometime before writing the screenplay for Disney+'s tentpole original feature, the rebooted live-action Lady and the Tramp, and after inventing the film genre "mumblecore," Andrew Bujalski wrote and directed Support the Girls, the Regina Hall led comedy-drama released in 2018. There are threads that aren't supposed to exist. You can get from A to B in only so many ways. When a path is deviated to such a degree as this is, the journey becomes impossible to parse. The result in this case is the incredibly uneven Support the Girls, which had promise but goes off the rails quickly before eventually crashing and exploding in a ditch.
I was really anticipating this, having thoroughly enjoyed his previous film Results, which felt like a natural and pleasing maturation of the storytelling and filmmaking modes Bujalski explored on many of his early mumblecore works (Computer Chess not included). But the comedy is played far too broad here, with some of the supporting characters' work coming off as hack. Hall is great in this and does her best to tie it all together, but there are too many missed beats and squandered opportunities. The final act is a total mess that takes this from a passable flick to one that's difficult to recommend.
