 | MOVIE #1,161 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 09.25.23 PART OF THE JIA ZHANGKE DIRECTOR FOCUS Swimming Out Till the Sea Turns Blue is definitely an anti-climactic end to this Director Focus on Jia Zhangke. His most recent feature to date is a documentary film about three authors attending a literary festival in his hometown in Shanxi. You might be surprised to hear this, but that’s a fairly niche subject. I struggled with this one much like I have most of the work in the doc genre. Like 2010’s I Wish I Knew (and the two shorter efforts before it) as well as his hybrid film 24 City (2008), my lack of interest and working knowledge on the material simply cannot be accounted for (even if they’re still nice enough to look at). |
