MOVIE #1,146 •🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿• 09.12.23 Now here’s a GOOD movie with a # in the title! A very good one, in fact: a great one? The idea of learning about the present by understanding the past (the backdrop of the movie, finding the petroglyphs, etc.) is a lie. As our lead, Laura, blithely re-recites that line verbatim to her train compartment mate Lyokha (her antithesis in every way), who then gives its empty sentiment the time of day it deserves, we realize the only way to capture the essence of life is to live in the moment. Laura fights against this urge at every turn. When a fellow countryman steals her memories of Moscow on her tape recorder, she bemoans a lost world that didn't really exist because we all eventually come to the conclusion that the thing in which we want from our memories can never stack up with reality.

There are other ideas at play here concerning the language divide and gender politics (among other things) and it’s all wonderfully done. The “fuck you / I love you” note/drawing is the perfect ending, encompassing all the misery and bliss life has to offer. Honestly, I’m not looking for much else in a movie.
