🎙️ EPISODE 483: 06.07.22 Sometimes it's nice to just sit back and let a simple story take you away. It's worthwhile to see things from a different perspective. I often avoid movies of this ilk because I fear they're going to be formulaic or rote, but when they're done well, they really are a treasure. Awkwafina is terrific in this, surprisingly restrained even after the film itself sets her up as this potential wildcard. It's sweet and a tender film with just enough subtle and incredibly timed comedic moments providing levity. It doesn't quite stick the landing, but that may have also been the point: there's no such thing.

The Farewell (Chinese: 别告诉她; pinyin: Bié Gàosù Tā; lit. 'Don't Tell Her') is a 2019 American comedy-drama film written and directed by Lulu Wang. It stars Awkwafina, Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, and Zhao Shuzhen. The film follows a Chinese-American family who, upon learning their grandmother has only a short while left to live, decide not to tell her and schedule a family gathering before she dies. It was released on January 25, 2019.
