🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 | 🎙️ EPISODE 497: 06.27.22 The 00s were a strange time for cinema. Whenever I venture into these waters, I am astonished at some of the visual choices. Before directors like Nicolas Winding Refn and others would go all the way blowing out colors and cloaking everything in neon — which, love it or hate it, is a stylistic CHOICE — filmmakers tended to hedge their bets, as if they were experimenting with those aesthetics and too weary of going all in. So you end up with with something like this from new Halloween trilogy honcho David Gordon Green: a very mid movie if there ever was one, which somehow tricked poor Roger Ebert into giving it a perfect 4-star score (lol). Its a hodgepodge of weird visuals and unnecessary editing tricks and funky random zooms, in service of what exactly? A fairly boring backwoods suspense thriller albeit buoyed by a strong performance from lifer Jamie Bell in the lead role. And that's that. |
