The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot

🎙️ EPISODE 531: 08.12.22

This is movie is an odd bird. A completely baiting title (and trailer to some degree) which turns out to be many degrees more low-key than one would ever guess. Sam Elliot is doing his Sam Elliot thing and even gets sensitive with some tears a couple times. I read somewhere that the writer-director initially did have a much more pulpy film in mind, but it changed along the way to whatever this is. I think that it not ending up a massive failure is a small miracle, to some degree. It's the type of tongue-in-cheek high-concept I normally scoff at, but there's actually a decent amount to like (really appreciated the clever transitions between past and present, for example). The moodier and much more serious tone is interrupted here and there (bigfoot barf, anyone?), but it's always juxtaposed with more drama. And ultimately in that drama is where the film starts to wane and lose steam (way too many metaphors in the various monologues). Robert D. Krzykowski, a first-time feature director, doesn't pull off the third act, but it's still a decent effort.
