🎙️ EPISODE 574: 10.12.22

Every single found footage movie has been just a little bit worse than The Blair Witch Project haven't they? If they keep making them, they will eventually make the worst movie ever made. I'm convinced of that. So here’s the deal with this one (SPOILERS, duh): dudes stage a viral haunting for hits online but their faking it is outed, then one of the dudes has an actual haunting where he ALMOST dies and subsequently quits the internet, then journalist lady discovers that actually (haha) it was all fake from the very beginning then he does one more video where he hangs himself (with the help of the ghost?) and his body disappears. That’s it. That’s how it ends. It couldn't decide on what twist it wanted to do so itgarbled up all of the options and left the audience with nothing.
This isn't a true found footage movie. If film genres were poker, than the mockumentary framework found here definitely trumps found footage. I think one of the appeals of this type of movie, if not the main one, is that you can film a feature on your phone and you have a built-in excuse why it looks like this. But I think the quality of the video fidelity is still secondary to the strength of the content in the end. And the latter here is poorly lacking, both in terms of focus and general interest. For example, during the mockumentary segments, a social psychologist pops in to do some animated tangential stories (how social media triggers our dopamine response, etc.) and they just don't work in the greater context of what is clearly a made-up story.

Look, I realize this is a SMALL budget work and I hate shitting on someone's creativity when they're clearly trying to make something original. There's some nice tricky minimalist editing in this, which I appreciated, but ultimately... this was not for me.
