Black Christmas

🎙️ EPISODE 627: 12.26.22

This is often noted as one of the earliest slasher films, but after doing a minute or two of research, I'm sorry to report that it's actually not even the first CHRISTMAS-THEMED slasher films ('sup 1972's double feature worthy Whoever Slew Auntie Roo? and Silent Night, Bloody Night, not to be confused with Silent Night, DEADLY Night — but, hey, I have next year's Christmas episode lined up now). This isn't to say it's not notable, however. It's definitely an intriguing entry in the weird (and shockingly rich) world of holiday horror. Especially how they render the killer: a stylized and never discovered evil entity called "Billy." It's an entertaining movie by the guy who also made A Christmas Story, if you can believe it, with some solid performances and unintentional comedy related to culturally dated stuff of the era. Was surprised the abortion debate played such a central role in the plot.
