🎙️ EPISODE 619: 12.14.22 I was a little weary of getting into this one because when this 'type' of movie goes wrong, hoo boy watch out. There's nothing worse than a rote, paint-by-numbers, feel-good dramedy (with romance!). It's really one of the trickier genres to pull off. But I'm pleased to report that this one from first-time feature writer-director Paul Downs Colaizzo sticks the landing. I was definitely worried it was about to go south when they introduced the romantic counterpart but Utkarsh Ambudkar is great and has terrific chemistry with Jillian Bell. As dramatic and as surprisingly dark as this gets, it never loses sight of the humor at its core. This is largely because of its very strong cast but especially Bell, who is just effortlessly funny.

The film follows an overweight woman in New York City who sets out to lose weight and train for the city's annual marathon. It had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. It was released on January 28, 2019.
