🎙️ EPISODE 678: 04.03.23 Billed as "the first Charlie Kaufman short film," Jackals & Fireflies is unique for a different and more interesting reason: it's, perhaps, his first real collaborative effort as a director. Written and starring the poet Eva H.D., who provides the narration as well, Kaufman has completely submitted and committed to another's text, allowing the filmmaker — who's still far better known and appreciated for his scripts — to step back and simply concentrate on the visuals. Shot using Samsung Galaxy phones (the tech giant footed the bill, though that fact is shuddered to the background, thankfully), I thought this looked amazing. At this point, Kaufman doesn't get nearly enough credit for his talents behind the camera, but perhaps this beautiful and fascinating 20-minute effort might change that.
