MOVIE #1,175 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 10.04.23 50 MOVIES IN 32 DAYS! This fantasy film from 1961, featuring Dennis Hopper’s first starring role, is considered one of the first “indie” movies ever. It plays fast and loose with reality here, and I guess that can be forgiven considering the general dreamlike tone, but what are clearly plot holes in the final act left me feeling a little off. But Curtis Harrington, the writer-director, who is considered one of the forerunners of New Queer Cinema, looks like an interesting figure and I might jump off from this and do a full Director Focus one day. While narratively this isn’t great, it’s still wonderful to look at and Hopper looks adorable in his little sailor outfit… |
