MOVIE #1,259 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 11.30.23 This one really lost me in the second half. And that’s a shame because it’s a fairly meaty role for Hong, who’s present in about half a dozen scenes. It does some things I appreciate in a neo-noir — like not trying too hard for that classic noir feel and letting the film live in its present day (in this case, the 80s, and it is very 80s). But ultimately it lacks suspense and struggles with its footing in regards to the two leading ladies’ motivations and arcs. The director, Bob Rafelson, is best known for his late 60s/early 70s Jack Nicholson collabs (and, perhaps, classics?), Head and Five Easy Pieces. Hong plays a P.I. in Hawaii whose only purpose is to help push the plot forward, but he brings a flare and has a comical death… |
Also of note, is that Dennis Hopper has a comically small role as the second victim, a Dallas toy store magnate and he’s fine, exactly what you’d expect…
That gorilla grabbing her at the end is so random lol...
I know Debra Winger is a ‘big name’ actress but I honestly think this is the first movie I’ve ever seen her in. She’s very good, as is Theresa Russell in the villain role playing opposite. They help make this a little bit more palatable, but it’s not great. I’m not sure where it ranks in the Black Widowverse, honestly.
