This stylish dramedy about a teenager who finds himself in the middle of a conflict between his mother and his recently deceased father’s gay lover actually cleaned up at the Taiwanese version of the Oscars and other local film awards before landing on Netflix internationally. It was never outwardly “funny” (to me) and, at points, far too melodramatic, especially in the numerous flashbacks. It’s peppered with various animation overlays which also rubbed me the wrong way and seemed unnecessary, tonally misplaced…

So I didn’t connect with this but I fully admit that I am as far off from the target audience as could be.

Dear Ex (Chinese: 誰先愛上他的) is a 2018 Taiwanese comedy-drama film co-directed by Mag Hsu and Hsu Chih-yen. It stars Roy Chiu, Hsieh Ying-xuan, Spark Chen and Joseph Huang. The film received generally positive reviews from critics and was selected as the Taiwanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 92nd Academy Awards, but it was not nominated. It was released on November 2, 2018.
