MOVIE #1,374 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 02.14.24
The pure insanity of this makes up for its half-baked plot, though it's something of a mystery how such a slight premise spawned a franchise that yielded three more movies. The 80s/90s were such a rich time for needless/endless sequels, especially in the mid-budget horror and fantasy genres. Wishmaster concerns a djinn, a wish-granting, evil genie who is released from a jewel and seeks to capture the soul of the woman who discovered him, thereby opening a portal and freeing his fellow djinn to inhabit and enslave the Earth. Its director, Robert Krutzman, is better known as a legendary special effects and makeup guy: his credits include From Beyond, several of the Evil Dead films, and creating the fantastic creature designs in A Nightmare on Elm Street 3, among many others.

This whole picture is essentially a showcase for his creative work in this department and it’s worth a watch for that alone. A small sampling…

Wishmaster is also notable for featuring a slew of fun cameos from classic 80s horror villain actors in 'normal' roles: Freddy (Robert Englund) has the biggest part, Phantasm's Angus Scrimm serves as the narrator (voice only), Friday the 13th's best known Jason (Kane Hodder) plays a security guard, and the Candyman himself Tony Todd is really excellent in his one brief scene (and Mini-Me, an unrecognizable Verne Troyer, plays a little mutant version of the djinn, see below & RIP). Andrew Divoff is also hamming it up as the djinn and this one works so long as you don't think too hard about the dodgy plot.
