• VOLUME LXII •

This isn't terrible but it's main issue is a glaring one: the inciting incident is a murder we don't see of a character we don't know. This is too obvious not to be intentional but I can't see what service it's in. There are far too many moving parts and not nearly enough action. For long stretches it just seems like we cut from one boring boardroom or meeting place setting to the next and listen to a bunch of chatterbug exposition: a ‘real show, don't tell’ problem if there ever was one. This TRUE RANDOM selection was actually helmed by a very notable filmmaker: Takeshi “Beat Takeshi” Kitano, who is better known for his earlier comedic works. I can’t say I’m a fan of his late style after one viewing, but I am nevertheless keeping his name on the list to further explore at a later time.
