Pathology

MOVIE #1,567 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 04.24.24
This cast is so 2008. All of these actors are familiar but I can't name a single one aside from Alyssa Milano (there’s the dopey friend from Garden State, guy who kinda looks like the tortured emo teen from American Beauty, older actor I think I remember from TV?). The plot concerns a bunch of doctors in residency at a prestigious pathology program in some unnamed city. These guys are all freaks. How/why does the doctor-teacher allow them to act like this? They pathology hard, they party hard. They also like to go out at night and commit serial murders in strange and unusual ways as part of a game to stump the others when determining the cause of death later. You know, college hijinks. It seems very convenient that this many absolute psychopaths landed in the same program!
There are weirdly similar themes to the other movie reviewed today. Here, the vigilantism is more out of a sense of nihilism vs. the right-wing extremism in that film. I’ll take the synergy anyway I can get it, even when it’s demented as this. But we’re not working with much beyond the edgelord premise…

The movie begins with a title card displaying the Hippocratic Oath, which is so funny in hindsight. The screenplay is by filmmaking duo Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor, responsible for the Crank flicks as well as the superior Ghost Rider entry (the latter went on to helm the subversive Nicolas Cage vehicle Mom and Dad, that I actually really liked). This is still watchable for the most part (if you can stomach the gross body horror) but it’s ultimately too pointless for me to recommend. I would love to know how, why and when this landed on my watchlist to begin with.
