MOVIE #1,586 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 04.29.24
In Mark’s own words:
I once spent the afternoon with a friend and we looked at a can of peas for a long time. We videotaped the can of peas. We called it a can of seap. We took the video and thought, this could be a cooking show. We edited the video a little. We did not want to stray from the theme of canned peas. We tried doing a voice over. It didnt work. We couldnt make the can look like it was moving its mouth. We decided it would be a silent film.
This embodies one of Mark’s longest-running obsessions: food and its consumption. By placing this can of peas, as is, into and on various household cooking devices and kitchen appliances he seems to be commenting on that fact that the can — with all of its colorful branding and design and its wonderful, classic shape — is, in and of itself, not food. But product. This made me think of Mark basically only eating Subway subs on his first trek across America a few years later (for some reason — we’ll get to this eventually).
