A Girl's Own Story

Part of the Jane Campion • Director Focus series

I don’t know if it was fidelity of the file on Vimeo but this film feels like it was made during the early 60s, the time period it is set (which added to the overall tone). It’s a fragmentary look at female adolescence in the age of Beatlemania and it’s also the most experimental work Campion has likely ever made (it ends with a musical sequence). Despite its audacious leanings, it still manages to capture that awkward feelings of pre-teens entering puberty and how the stress of family drama leads to isolation and acting out.
