I just kept waiting for something more to happen but it never did: Kiki is a witch (OK that’s cool) and she has a delivery service and she does deliveries (yup, that’s all, folks). This came out a little over a year after the excellent Totoro and it feels rushed and extremely sleight in comparison. It’s also WAY more childish-seeming (and I realize this is a bone of contention to a degree, because all of his work — save a few entries — are clearly geared towards kids). His next movie is about an Italian pig who is also a World War I ex-fighter pilot ace, so we got that going for us. |

Kiki's Delivery Service (Japanese: 魔女の宅急便, Hepburn: Majo no Takkyūbin, lit. 'Witch's Express Home Delivery') is a 1989 Japanese animated fantasy film written, produced, and directed by Hayao Miyazaki, based on the 1985 novel of the same name by Eiko Kadono. It was animated by Studio Ghibli for Tokuma Shoten, Yamato Transport and the Nippon Television Network, and stars the voices of Minami Takayama, Rei Sakuma and Kappei Yamaguchi. The story follows Kiki, a young witch who moves to the port city of Koriko with her cat Jiji and starts a flying courier service. It was released on July 29, 1989.
