What Did Jack Do?

MOVIE #1,761 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 06.25.24
As we near the end of this extensive David Lynch short film review series, this one — a 2017 black-and-white movie in which Lynch interrogates a monkey (voice by Lynch) — might be the last ‘real’ piece of filmmaking we ever get to see from the master. Released onto Netflix in 2020 (where most people first saw it), it’s certainly among the sharpest-produced in his large short-form catalog, to say the least. Earlier this month in 2024, when Lynch teased a new project, many fans (myself included) were let down to find out it was just another music album with the tall, pretty lady from TP: The Return. But Lynch doesn’t owe anybody anything. If the talking monkey movie is his last, then so be it. It’s a lot of fun.

(INSERT SOMETHING HERE ABOUT HOW LYNCH QUESTIONING HIMSELF - AS A MONKEY - IS A METAPHOR FOR HIS ENTIRE CAREER. SURE, THAT SOUNDS ABOUT RIGHT.)
