Do the Right Thing

a SPIKE LEE Director Focus Joint

This movie is almost a bait and switch and I mean that as a compliment. The build-up to the climax is a highly enjoyable ride, brilliantly mixing comedy with drama and social commentary, but the ending is kicked up to an entirely new level. I wasn’t prepared for it. And that’s the point. The last half-hour is perfect filmmaking. The cast is SO good, even Spike Lee seems like a good actor (JK, but it’s by far his performance yet). It’s pretty telling that the only acting Oscar nom this garnered was for Danny Aiello (who is amazing, don’t get me wrong) and not any of the Black actors. Ossie Davis should have won Best Supporting Actor (he at least should have been nominated over Dan Aykroyd in Driving Miss Daisy lol). Yeah, it’s a timeless, 10/10 classic. The End.
