MOVIE #2,340 • SCORE N/A • 02.27.24
SERIES: ALBERT & AKERMAN

Well, we’ve reached the first entry in this dueling filmography that is completely and officially M.I.A. What is “New York, New York bis”? A lost 8-minute short with next to no other information available online. “Bis” loosely translates to “twice” or “encore” in English, which — if referencing the titular place, NYC — seems redundant, frankly. On the official Chantal Akerman Foundation website, the entry for the film comes with the cryptic note: “Perdu. Troisième suicide (Saute ma ville, Sylvia Plath et encore moi)”...

That (via Google Translate) reads: “Lost. Third suicide (Jump my town, Sylvia Plath and me again).” Huh, OK.

It’s kind of surprising, given the sheer volume written about Akerman, that there isn’t more information on what — up to this point, at least — is her first truly ‘lost’ entry. Was the film ever shown? Is there anyone on earth alive who has seen it and why haven’t they chimed in on their blog about this mystery movie by one of cinema’s great auteurs (if you ask me, this would be a huge opportunity for clout, even if the short work sucks/sucked ass)? Alas, we’ll likely never know.
