🎙️ EPISODE 333: 03.02.2021 *Review starts @ ~ 16:52

This is a 1986 documentary by German experimental film director Werner Nekes , originally titled Was geschah wirklich zwischen den Bildern? ("What really happened between the pictures?"). Nekes, in addition to making some really cool experimental shorts, some of which are on YouTube, was a collector of historical optical objects. This film is more or less a chance for him to show off said collection, though it also functions as fairly thorough history of the moving picture. Exploring artifacts and techniques spanning numerous cultures around the globe over the last thousand years, Film Before Film is a highly specific and very geeky trip. The retitled version features a narrated voiceover mixed with the original German, set up by the man himself: Nekes and his gadgets....

But the movie quickly becomes a series of small vignettes looking at the various instruments used to make art over time. The most fascinating part of this might be the vast amount of horniness on display throughout history. So much of these technical developments were centered on making proto-porno stuff lol. I went ahead and did a supercut of all the horny art featured in this....
The only other thing of note here is the soundtrack, by the British experimental composer, Anthony Moore, totally slaps and you should check out his stuff. My guess is this film's appeal is pretty damn niche, but if you think you might be into something like this, you'll probably appreciate it.
