🎙️ EPISODE 229: 12.25.19
Reviewing this film now feels… silly. What is anyone supposed to write that will add to “the dialogue” ? I suppose there is an alternate history of my life where I might publish the blog post “Top 10 Reasons Why Christmas Vacation Needs to GTFO in 2020” as a testament to post-millennial trash culture (JK). I wouldn’t believe a word of it, but it would be fun to write as a satirical thing. The truest (critical) thing I can write is that the most offensive part of this movie is that, in John Hughes’s warped capitalist brain, the worst thing that could happen to a white upper middle class family in 1989 is not having enough money to put in a swimming pool. This film is a hot mess of vignettes that either work extremely well or fail spectacularly in the stupidest ways imaginable. And the line between them is THIN. It’s a holiday classic, which is to say you have to be a psychopath to watch this in any month of the year besides December. |
