MOVIE 📖 #1,319 • 01.28.24I REVIEW BOOKS ON THE LAST SUNDAY OF EVERY MONTH
A fittingly titled, posthumously released primer on the short story work of the great Barry Hannah. Featuring selections from each of his previously released collections in addition to other work from each era and a final section of new writing. It’s long (close to 500 pages) and last (duh), although I’m not sure how happy it is. Hannah’s characters are fucked up, devilishly funny as they are sick and depraved. It’s fascinating to see his prose style ebb and flow over the years, and though I still want to eventually fill in the gaps and read/re-read each original work of shorts on their own, this is a fine place to start (or finish) if you’re unfamiliar with one of my all-time favorite writers.
Long, Last, Happy: New and Selected Stories is a 2010 collection of short stories by the American author Barry Hannah. It includes a selection of stories from his four earlier collections, Airships (1978), Captain Maximus (1985), Bats Out of Hell (1993), and High Lonesome (1996), along with one early work never published before in volume form and four new stories. It was published in December 2010 by Grove Press, after Hannah's death in March earlier that year. It was released on December 10, 2010.
