🎙️ EPISODE 224: 12.31.19
Ironic that this movie about writing needs less writing and more movie. Its 3+ hour run-time is a problem, what with a half dozen or more purely conversational and wholly existential scenes that stay way past their welcome, or any reasonable expectation for viewer interest. It's a beautifully shot story with an engaging premise and 50% of it could have been left on the cutting room floor. I'm never one to cower from a long movie, but it needs to earn its length. There are fleeting moments when The Wild Pear Tree gets surreal; it needed more of that and less roundabout dialogue that never quite made a circle. The counterpoint that our attention spans have been forever ruined by the hyperculture might be valid, but I don't have time to think about that. |
