A tender look at losing a parent to dementia told in a –to put it lightly– non-traditional way. Who is Dick Johnson? Just a man, a man with no toes. He's not famous but he is loved, and he is a character. The genius of this doc is that it shows what it means to be alive, in all its glorious weirdness, without being sappy about it. Dick Johnson isn't dead yet. But what's worse is that he might be gone before he's done living. Making your 86yo dad act out various accidental death sequences is certainly a choice. It only works because the man is game. He's not famous but he's been waiting for these cameras his entire life. The best parts (and/or tricks) of this film is out how it plays with both the viewer's expectations and their good taste. But if life is just a wonderfully chaotic and occasionally cruel joke, and as more and more of all of our lives are collected digitally–itself a kind of perpetual performance–what's the big deal about one more movie? |
