🎙️ EPISODE 253: 03.11.20
The emotional hits in this aren't forced or cliched, and that's perhaps the highest praise one can bestow onto a kids movie, especially a Pixar movie wherein those elements can feel forced if not gratuitous almost by default. In fact, the true emotional arch is disguised for much of the film. This film both made me cry and surprised me! Also, there are several other thematic undercurrents at play, from the presence and/or lack of magic in one's everyday life to the power of believing in yourself. And on top of that, it hits all the usual comedic beats in the midst of some really creative action and tremendous world-building. It's a shame that this is underperforming (in part due to the pandemic but also from shockingly lukewarm reviews) because I would love to see some additions to this fantastical realm. What more can you ask for from a kids movie? I think this is my favorite kids movie. |
