🎙️ EPISODE 416: 03.08.22

𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐨𝐟 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝟏𝟎-𝐕𝐨𝐥𝐮𝐦𝐞 RANKING GREENAWAY 𝐒𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐞𝐬

If you're a Drowning by Numbers Head like me, then this one is an essential watch. This is, for the most part, a "making of" featurette on the 1988 classic with a focus on thematic elements more than the practical ones. Clocking in at 26 minutes, it's one of the more concise artist explanations you'll come across, and I don't think that's necessarily a good thing. It's a delicate line. The line between wanting to unpack every last idea, because — I get it — these are YOUR great ideas and why wouldn't you want to make sure people are 'getting it' — the line between that and being David Lynch and never explaining anything, is a much trickier one to toe than it probably seems. I obviously love both Lynch and Greenaway. It's just sometimes feels like Greenaway's (very wordy) statements about filmmaking are at odds with the mission directive of those statements by the sheer nature of their bigness, and their wanting to be known. That being said, this is still an interesting little movie, even if its peek behind the curtains is a bit much.
