🎙️ EPISODE 421: 03.15.22 The hell that can be what we in the biz (the biz of having children) call "the kids movie landscape" is one which, thankfully, over time, I've learned to (mostly) circumvent. I can eye piece of shit kids content a mile away at this point. And sometimes, the greatest sins — as far these things, these very low-stakes things go — aren't initially evident. This is where my conigseaur's perspective comes in handy. For with this terrain, there's almost only one metric that matter: you gotta be rewarded on those repeat viewings. Because you're kids are gonna watch the shit out if it they like it. And this one, thanks mostly to some A+ voice work by the great John Cho is legit entertaining. Ignore the 30% lower Rotten Tomatoes score; this is actually a far better movie than another 2021 dragon-centric movie, Disney's Raya and the Last Dragon. I will stick by my theory that the fewer the filmmakers involved at the screenwriter/director level almost always leads to a better, tighter end product (this, like Sing 2 features a rare solo "written by/directed by" in the form of Chris Appelhans).

Wish Dragon is a 2021 computer-animated fantasy comedy film written and directed by Chris Appelhans and produced by Sony Pictures Animation. The film stars Jimmy Wong, John Cho, Constance Wu, Natasha Liu Bordizzo, Jimmy O. Yang, Aaron Yoo, Will Yun Lee, and Ronny Chieng. Jackie Chan produced the film and voiced Cho's role in the Chinese Mandarin version. It was released on June 11, 2021.
