Sonic the Hedgehog

🎙️ EPISODE 453: 04.26.22

You never expect too much from these movies, but Jesus Christ is the plot logic of Sonic the Hedgehog flawed. For example, why does a "fed up with being stuck on Earth" Sonic create the blue frustration lightning event which puts Jim Carey on his trail when he could've just teleported to another planet with his rings whenever he wanted? Am I asking too much here? I didn't care about the insane event which leads a baby Sonic from his mom, a giant owl — is that character from the game? (No you aren't going crazy; she's not) — they needed to get him in the realm of humans one way or another. This was their choice. James Marsden, the best in the biz in terms of work alongside cartoons, needed the work — shit it's been nearly a decade since Hop! But every single decision, every subsequent choice is bad, so asinine. I kind of appreciated it in an asburde, "Hey that's random!" / chance operations kind of way.
This is a weird, mostly bad and highly baffling film. There's ridiculous product placement (Zillow, Olive Garden), the overacting of a lifetime for Jim Carrey (and that's saying something!) and — most famously — the well-documented CGI disaster that was the Sonic character redesign...

But if you know anything about me and my scale for critiquing kids flicks, the curve I use doesn't really give a shit about 'traditional things which might make a movie good'. I can forgive a ton. Like, it's not cool that James Marsden plays a cop but it is cool that Sonic calls refers to him as "Donut Lord," etc. This is the ying and yang; this is how the universe works.

I watched this with my daughter who was sick and laid up. We wanted to see if it was good enough to check out the sequel in theaters. She's becoming more and more the tiny critic herself and, although I could tell she enjoyed it, I felt some suspicion creeping in: This is bad, isn't it? her eyes seemed to say. And then it dawned on me that I won't be watching these movies forever. I guess this is growing up.
