🎙️ EPISODE 477: 05.30.22

This got off to a bit of a slow start (11 minutes of two dudes frantically walking through trenches set to faux tribal music), but I actually really appreciated the one-shot gimmick because, as very recently noted, I don't have a lot of time for these “war” movies. A fun game you can play at home is to try and find the spots where they might have added a digital cut (usually between smoke and shadows, imo). Overall, as far as the genre goes, this one was much more ‘my speed’ — the harrowing nature of war and the stench of death which accompanies is on full display here; even if it’s just about the bare minimum. This movie is fine.

1917 is a 2019 war film directed and produced by Sam Mendes, who co-wrote the film with Krysty Wilson-Cairns. Partially inspired by stories told to Mendes by his paternal grandfather Alfred about his service during World War I,[6] the film takes place after the German retreat to the Hindenburg Line during Operation Alberich, and follows two British soldiers, Will Schofield (George MacKay) and Tom Blake (Dean-Charles Chapman), in their mission to deliver an important message to call off a doomed offensive attack. Mark Strong, Andrew Scott, Richard Madden, Claire Duburcq, Colin Firth, and Benedict Cumberbatch also star in supporting roles. It was released on December 4, 2019.
