Me saying this is the gayest movie I've ever seen might not mean much given my admitted blind spot in that field, but an unrequited lesbian love story / horror mystery set against the late 70s gay male porn industry is pretty damn gay imo. This is the second in what will be an ongoing Wednesday throughout June celebrating LGBTQ+ Pride Month, although "celebrating" in this care is the wrong word because this movie mostly sucks ass. Saying "who is this for?" has become a trendy go-to for quick and cheap criticism. It also does part of the marketing department's job for them when the audience announces what demographics a thing is or isn't suited, as if that should really matter at any part of the creation process; let's just all fucking read the financial returns whenever we have a thought about a movie while we're at it. |
But THAT BEING SAID, I do struggle with that question here. What particularly muddies this is the odd choice to partner the horror killings saga with our protagonist's tragic romance. She even sexually assaults her former partner at one point while the killer watches (?). This isn't just at odds with the quasi-supernatural storyline (a gay man's father tries to burn him alive for being gay but he escapes and now, disfigured, becomes a serial killer of gay male actors with the help of a blind crow), it actively cuts away at any understanding or sympathy the audience might have for this troubled soul. Tack on the fact that it looks like dog-shit and you've got **checks notes** a film which competed for the Palme d'Or at Cannes. Ah, OK then.
