How to Change Your Mind

"MOVIE" #1,044 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 06.30.23

Based on the Michael Pollan book of same name, this four-episode Netflix limited series examines the history and uses of psychedelics, with a focus on LSD, ‘shrooms, MDMA and peyote. I enjoyed Pollan’s 2016 series Cooked (also based on a book) which explored the history of food through the lenses of the four natural elements, fire, water, air and earth. He takes a hardline scientific approach to unpacking these drugs (all developed from compounds naturally occurring in nature) and their complicated legal and sociological histories. And while he ingests most of the substances, the focus is never about him; he simply pops in and out as a loose guide. It’s well put-together and entertaining, and my only criticism is that it leans a little too hard into its pro-psychedelic agenda (even if I wholeheartedly agree with that stance). I was mainly curious to see how the doctors overseeing the recent case studies dealt with “bad trips” the participants might’ve had (for example).
