I revisited this one after seeing it a few years ago because I've been on a renewed Arthur Russell kick lately. He's really become one of my all-time favorite artists. This doc is pretty much a straight down the middle linear look at his life ans musical career, but it's a fantastic introduction to a criminally underappreciated songwriter and musician. (My one small complaint would be that it brushes over his folk/pop stuff too quickly, but that might be due to the fact that so much of it has only seen the light posthumously.) At 70 miutes long, this is probably the perfect length. This could have been three hours. There's more than enough music and, in equal measure, folks willing to talk about the music and the person who made it. But as a primer — and, arguably, it's most valuable in this role — it works tremendously.

Wild Combination: A Portrait of Arthur Russell is a documentary film about musician Arthur Russell, directed by Matt Wolf. Released theatrically in 2008, the film was generally well received by critics, winning various awards at international film festivals. Its world premiere was at the Berlin International Film Festival (Panorama), and its theatrical premieres were at the IFC Center in New York and the ICA in London. It was released on February 18, 2008.
