🎙️ EPISODE 559: 09.21.22 This was one of the more tonally disjointed films I've seen in awhile. I'll give music video maven turned infrequent feature director Jonas Åkerlund credit for even attempting to tell this true story — the infamous and evil goings-on surrounding the Early Norwegian black metal scene — but the lack of nuance here is astounding. Juxtaposing cutesy Rory Culkin voice-over with the slow and methodical murder sequences (I think all 60 of the combined stab wounds got screen-time) was a CHOICE, man. On paper, this feels like perfect fodder for a movie, but in the end, what actually transpired was so literally strange and evil, I'm not sure anyone was ever going to do it justice with a dramatic interpretation. (One could also make the case that the players here — most notably Varg Vikernes — are so vile, why even acknowledge their existence with a two-hour feature film?)

Lords of Chaos is a 2018 horror-thriller film directed by Jonas Åkerlund and written by Lillie Rammal, Dennis Magnusson, and Åkerlund. Adapted from the 1998 book of the same name, the film is a historical fiction account of the early 1990s Norwegian black metal scene told from the perspective of Mayhem co-founder Euronymous. It stars Rory Culkin as Euronymous, Emory Cohen as Varg Vikernes, Jack Kilmer as Dead, and Sky Ferreira as Ann-Marit. It was released on January 23, 2018.
