🎙️ EPISODE 604: 11.23.22

This is an extremely frustrating film. It too often ends up feeling like a bunch of gags thrown against the wall to see what'll stick. There's enough legitimately funny goofs and interesting threads — sometimes even resembling a plot! — that will keep you watching, but the whole thing ultimately feels too way overindulgent and in love with itself. It's an absurdist spoof of a 'perfect' suburban life. I would've added "white" but they felt the need to drop some completely token black characters into this fucked up world, which is such an odd choice because, towards the end, when our protagonist finds a 'normal' African-American family living in her childhood home... I mean it's right there! (i.e., make them the only black people we encounter!). Literally the only time they were afraid to take the joke all the way fucks up the best satire they could've made. But even the lower stakes satirical points get washed away instantaneously by some inane "wow so random!" moment. What we're left with mostly can only be described as current SNL trying to do Tim and Eric. Not good!
