🎙️ EPISODE 658: 03.06.23 Part of 2022 Week!
This is an entertaining and compelling film, surprising in the best possible way. It really subverts the victim narrative which has become a standard fallback in recent years, to a degree (in this 'type' of movie). Probably could have done without Aubrey Plaza's strained North Jersey accent, but other than that? Not too many complaints. "Saddled with student debt and unable to find work, a college graduate becomes involved in a credit card scam" is a fairly stock late-capitalism setup, but writer-director John Patton Ford (in his debut feature) is able to transcend that narrative. Even if the conclusion is a little goofy, it's much better than the stock ending you might be expecting.
