🎙️ EPISODE 658: 03.06.23
Part of 2022 Week!

I watched this one on a whim. I knew Robert Downey Jr.'s dad was a weirdo indie filmmaker but I haven't explored that world yet. Directed by (the best documentary I've ever seen) American Movie's Chris Smith — whose 2000s and on work has been hit or miss (he's responsible for one of the two the Fyre fest docs, the mostly meh Operation Varsity Blues, and a driving force behind the cultural phenomenon that is the Tiger King Expanded Universe, which I refuse to engage on any level) — "Sr." doubles as a decent primer on Iron Man's father's important and subversive career, as well as a loving ode from a son to dad in his final years. Jr. comes across both guarded and more normal than you might ever expect (probably not a surprise given the life he's led). So this serves as an intriguing and somewhat atypical entry point in terms of a profile. I enjoyed it and it made me want to explore Sr.'s filmmaking soon.
