🎙️ EPISODE 706: 04.21.23

A pretty boilerplate documentary — btw I love using the word "boilerplate" to describe documentaries; check the archives to see how many times I use that word and win a prize! — about climate change's role in the devastating 2019-2020 Australian brushfires , unfortunately given the same title as one of the more interesting dramatic films of recent times (which feels like an oversight, right?). Some potential solutions are provided by a Mr. Solar Power Ponytail Tech Guy, the Aussie version of Greta Thunberg shows up and manages to be as equally annoying as she is right, and the Prime Minister at the time is really raked over the coals and deservedly so (best scene in the movie is when a group of locals he's visiting for a photo op call him a fuckwit to his face). All my ingrown cynicism aside, I do think framing the issue within the constraints of singular recent evens, such as the fires, is probably the most effective way of getting the message across. Saying the global temp is this or that, just doesn't carry the same weight as a charred koala.
