🎙️ EPISODE 685: 04.06.23
ραɾƚ σϝ ƚԋҽ DARREN ARONOFSKY ԃιɾҽƈƚσɾ ϝσƈυʂ ʂҽɾιҽʂ

Darren Aronofsky made four short films during his time at the AFI Conservatory in the early 90s. Of these, three are available online while Supermarket Sweep seems to be in need of a clean-up on aisle "find me." (Sorry.) 1991's Fortune Cookie is about a salesman who becomes addicted to fortunes, and finds himself unable to complete a sale unless he gets a good fortune from a cookie at the local Chinese restaurant (even though the food is making him sick). Adapted from a Hubert Selby Jr. story (Aronofsky also turned adapted his novel, Requiem for a Dream for his second full-length), this is an overtly comical micro-satire, almost a spoof really. Already featuring his patented ultra-quick closeup cuts which wouldn't become a meme until Requiem ...

It's fairly enjoyable, honestly, if you can get past the early 90s and try-hard student thesis vibes.
