🎙️ EPISODE 700: 04.18.23
I couldn't possibly think of a better film to review for Episode 700! This South African horror vehicle is the most "7 out of 10" movie that, perhaps, I've ever critiqued, and what's 7x10 but.... Look, I've been using the word "vibes" a lot lately, and I'm trying to quit, but sometimes that's the only fitting way to describe something. There's no tangible environmental message here that isn't immediately undone by the plot-hole laden, wackadoo narrative: the wife of a survivalist and his son turns into a tree which in turn breeds a new kind of fungus that transforms humans into freakish mushroom creatures. I'm sorry but no. However, the VIBES do work: the aesthetic and relatively low-budget FX are nice, the performances are fine, and — personally? — I'll always appreciate a Unabomber-esque anti-technology screed/message, no matter how undercooked it actually is. What can I say? I love a good screed!
