Cleopatra Jones

MOVIE #1,298 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 12.27.23

I think — somewhat embarrassingly — this is the first true blaxploitation film I’ve reviewed on this site. So, needless to say, I’m no expert on the genre. Are they all so tonally disjointed? The comedy is played broad and the action is legit for the most part. That these elements are often presented in rapid succession made it a little difficult for me to get my footing, but I still had a good time with it for the most part. These movies are so clearly trying to entertain on the most base of levels, they feel impossible to hate, even when the plot/exposition and pacing is off and/or boring. The characters are either gross (intentional) stereotypes or total cartoons (and sometimes — oftentimes? — both at once). But, again, I’m a total n00b when it comes to these pictures, so I’ll try to reserve judgment until I’ve tackled a few more.
