She Dies Tomorrow

MOVIE #1,297 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 12.26.23

I went into this with some trepidation, after not really getting anything out of Sun Don’t Shine. But I wound up loving this movie. It’s clever in a subtle, multifaceted way, and while some of its digital gloss and post-production FX were a little distracting, I think it’s generally a good-looking film (though I wonder what the Super 16 format, which Amy Seimetz utilized in her debut, could have done). This could be read as an interesting take on the doomsday scenario and/or the idea of prophecy. The movie beckons the audience to make these inferences at the very least. And I liked how she presented couples in different stages of their relationship, and an examination of this through an apocalyptic lens. Kate Lyn Sheil and Kentucker Audley return (the latter in a smaller role) eight years later and much better at the craft, alongside the great Jane Adams and a slew of notable, effective character actors. This is a very confident film that leans into its philosophical and absurd premise with gusto. I’m looking forward to what Seimetz does next.
