MOVIE #1,296 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 12.26.23 Clocking in south of 80 minutes, it's amazing what a slog this still is. I really hate to shit on low budget indies like this, but I mostly felt annoyed the whole time. The film’s constant use of conversational voiceover in place of actual conversations might have been a device utilized in the wake of technical shortcomings (?), but it doesn't work. And the one-note (manic!) performances of both the lead characters leaves no room to breathe (Kentucker Audley and Kate Lyn Sheil, whom I think are both good actors that have done work I've enjoyed). The fevered pace in and of itself isn’t a bad thing: I simply found no in-road to connect to these people or this story. It all adds up to a sorta post-mumblecore thriller that is not thrilling and goes nowhere (even if the latter is kind of the point). FWIW, I checked this out solely out of curiosity in advance of screening She Dies Tomorrow, writer-director Amy Seimetz’s follow-up to this, which was her debut. |
