 | MOVIE #1,286 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 12.19.23 This YouTube original documentary, which is a thing now, features lots of lofi archival, diaristic recordings of Cash's voice. It's all set to Ken Burns style photo montage and assorted video footage. It moves fast through the story and you feel like they could have expanded on any of these moments/eras more deeply. But it's set up as a primer. Without looking too deeply I'm sure there are a slew of other, longer Johnny Cash docs out there (a cursory search reveals at least a dozen dating back to 1969’s Johnny Cash! The Man, His World, His Music). I landed on this one because it was on a list of movies I started making in 2018. It certainly doesn't feel like the definitive cinematic portrait of the legend. I don't fault the filmmakers though. The story of Cash is gigantic to the point of myth. Even if they made a 10-hour docuseries I'm not sure they'd hit on everything/please everyone. |
