MOVIE #1,345 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 02.02.24 𝚙𝚊𝚛𝚝 𝚘𝚏 𝚝𝚑𝚎 𝙲𝙻𝙰𝙸𝚁𝙴 𝙳𝙴𝙽𝙸𝚂 (𝙵𝚛𝚎𝚗𝚌𝚑: [selin sjama];) 𝙳𝙸𝚁𝙴𝙲𝚃𝙾𝚁 𝙵𝙾𝙲𝚄𝚂 “I want this film to turn out strong, not frail, not fragile,” we here Claire Denis speak in English during this 50-minute documentary on the plight of Sudanese refugees who have been living in a more or less permanent camp for 10 years and counting. At first, this feels like fodder she could have used for a narrative film. But it’s too real, too stark: their day-to-day, frankly, too mundane on some level for a compelling fiction piece (they deal with malaria and malnutrition, and fight for the right to educate their children using a native program rather than that of their adopted home). I am but an imbecile when it comes to historical matters such as these: I have heard the word “Darfur” and can say only that. That I also have no interest is more specifically a problem, perhaps. But I’m trying to be real here in 2024. |
