MOVIE #1,496 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 04.01.24
Every two weeks on alternating Mondays, I am posting ten (10) Mark Baumer short film ‘reviews’ (yes, I am assessing these scores but I feel like my work here is more like that of a historian or curator — I’m creating a complete chronological catalog, essentially). This takes me more time than you probably think but seeing as how there are at least 1,000 movies to log, I don’t see how I can do this any other way (without dying before I finish!). Certainly some are better than others, but I’m trying to position myself as an impartial party. That being said, as I go through, I think I might start making ‘best-of’ lists from this master list, and I’ll try to group the select works via era (I’m assuming the dates for these eras will reveal themselves to me over time). chris cooper touched my roommate's mousepad is certainly a strong candidate for one of these editions because, although just 56 seconds long, it does a lot of what makes Baumer’s video output so special.
Mark has a roommate (unnamed) and he has a Rachel McAdams mousepad. Why McAdams? Why not! She’s lovely. Somehow, some way, we see a glimpse from an interview with the Academy Award-winning actor Chris Cooper and he is poking at the McAdams mousepad defiantly, though it’s unclear how or why he is addressing its existence (or McAdams’ image on it) in any direct way. The audio cuts in and out, which seems like an unintentional technical issue in the edit. The only words we hear Cooper say are “there’s a lot of casual acting in American film today” — when he touches the McAdams mousepad, we can’t hear what he’s saying. Is McAdams guilty of this “casual acting” (in Cooper’s opinion)? We’ll never know. The short ends with the roommate lovingly kissing the mousepad.
