Close-Up (1990)

MOVIE #1,477 • 🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿🍿 • 03.26.24
This is a short review as I plan on revisiting it down the line at some point.

The end of this film, with the real director cut up with these spying shots and crackling audio that comes in and out is brilliant. The convergence of these realities, both authentic and false, filmed from afar as if we're not meant to be seeing this (even though this film is the only reason we're seeing this): the whole thing feels ahead of its time. I 100% plan to do a deep dive on Kiarostami eventually (hopefully soon), but it's clear after seeing just two of his pictures that he's seeking to break through with the medium in ways that are new and extremely refreshing.

Close-Up (Persian: کلوزآپ ، نمای نزدیک, Klūzāp, nemā-ye nazdīk) is a 1990 Iranian docufiction written, directed and edited by Abbas Kiarostami. The film tells the story of the real-life trial of a man who impersonated film-maker Mohsen Makhmalbaf, conning a family into believing they would star in his new film. It features the people involved, acting as themselves. A film about human identity, it helped to increase recognition of Kiarostami internationally. It was released on June 9, 1990.
